When a small fire caused smoke damage throughout St Andrew's Methodist Church, the effects reached far beyond the area where the fire had started. Smoke contamination and staining had left the interior looking tired and unwelcoming, and the space could no longer be used by the community as it had been before.
HPH Painting & Decorating was brought in to carry out a full insurance reinstatement and return the church to a clean, welcoming standard.
Restoring a Place That Matters
Projects like this are about more than redecorating a building. Churches and community spaces play an important role in the lives of the people who use them, so restoring the interior meant helping to bring an important local place back into use.
That made care and attention particularly important throughout the project. The aim was not simply to make the visible damage disappear, but to complete the work properly so that the renewed finish would look right and continue to perform over time.
Dealing With Smoke Contamination and Staining
Fire and smoke damage calls for a more considered approach than a straightforward repaint. Applying a fresh decorative coat over contamination is not enough: without the right preparation and treatment, staining can remain visible or work its way back through the new finish.
We began by carefully removing the smoke contamination from the affected surfaces. Once the interior was properly prepared, the remaining stains were sealed to prevent them from bleeding through the new decoration.
This preparation formed the foundation for everything that followed. It is the part of the job that may be less noticeable in the finished photographs, but it is essential to achieving a clean, consistent and lasting result.
Complete Redecoration
With the contamination removed and the staining sealed, we redecorated every surface throughout the space. The fresh decoration lifted the interior and allowed the character of the church to come through again, from its high ceiling and exposed timber structure to the main worship area.
The completed room feels clean, bright and welcoming once more. Most importantly, it is ready to be used again by the people and wider community who rely on it.
Seeing the transformation from a smoke-damaged, unusable interior to a fully restored space is what work like this is all about. A great deal of care, preparation and the right systems went into the reinstatement, ensuring the result is more than a quick cosmetic improvement.
